Mobile homeowners in Florida are organizing a withholding of lot rent over the constant flooding in their mobile home parks. Equity Lifestyle Properties a REIT out of Chicago are the property owners of the mobile home parks in this story
“We are sick of the blame game” says one resident living in Whispering Pines and we are stuck in our homes for hours after a summer afternoon rain. It was never this bad.
Another resident from Down Yonder Village is very concerned because our park is flooding now, whats going to happen if we get a heavy storm??
Mobile homeowners have been coming together on Facebook in a group called We the people getting screwed by Equity lifestyle properties , where mobile homeowners all over Florida and other states are discussing options to push back against their landlord ELS. We’ve had the Guardian do a story about other issues now they’re coming back for this.
We pay over a thousand dollars a month to rent this little patch of land that the homes that we own sit on. This includes our water trash and shitty landscape service but we also get a hefty raise every year and the problems dont get better they get worse every year.
We dont know what else to do says one resident living in North Fort Myers who wishes to remain anonymous due to widespread manager retaliation in ELS owned properties. We’re still in disarray from Ian. If it wasnt for We the people we wouldn’t know this is a systemic problem in all ELS mobile home parks . I feel that we have a chance now as a combined group.
Residents from Down Yonder Village in Largo and a couple other nearby properties are planning to withhold rent with the courts in order to address their concerns because “We just don’t have the money to sue them every time they ignore a situation, but this will get their attention” says the coordinator of the infamous Facebook group
Down Yonder Village was a 5 star mobile home park at one time and that time was before this company Equity Lifestyle Properties took over.
